Want to start drinking yerba mate but don't want to mess around with traditional method requiring a gourd and straw? That's how I felt several years ago when I wanted to start drinking yerba mate as a way to cut back on coffee. I wasn't interested in the traditional aspects of how to brew it. I just wanted to drink it! Here's the two methods that I have successfully used to brew yerba mate over the past couple of years.
First of all your yerba mate might take on a slight coffee taste unless the filter basket and carafe are really clean. The second thing is that it can be hard to adjust the strength to your liking. It can take a lot of trial and error to get the mate to taste the way you want. The third problem is that you can't adjust the water temperature when using a coffee maker.
The second brewing method is the one that I think is best and use everyday. That is by using a coffee press or french press. The best part about using a coffee press is that you can very easily adjust the water temperature and brewing strength. Simply put the yerba mate in the press and add boiling or hot water. Then wait five or so minutes and push down on the plunger. The strength of the yerba mate can be made stronger by letting it sit longer before pushing down the plunger. You can even get tumblers that have a built in press. They are perfect for bringing yerba mate with you and even brewing it on the road.
Yerba mate is a fantastic daily beverage and can be a great choice for anyone looking to cut back on their coffee consumption. There's no need to mess around with confusing brewing techniques. Both of the methods in this article will let you brew a great tasting cup of mate quickly and easily. Enjoy!
